A child’s next term. A family rebuilding after loss. A new skill that opens the door to work. Knowing where to ask for support can make the next step feel more manageable.

Explore the assistance available, prepare the right questions and approach the appropriate welfare office with confidence.

More than financial assistance

A community that stands beside families

The Air Force Families Welfare Association, formerly known as AFWWA, supports the Air Force family community. Alongside welfare assistance, its work includes vocational training, opportunities for spouses and dependants, and activities that encourage confidence and independence. [1]

Start with the situation your family is facing. Then check the particular scheme’s conditions: a general connection with the Air Force should not be treated as confirmation that every grant applies.

Choose a card for a short explanation and a practical question to take to the welfare office.

01 · AFTER BEREAVEMENT

Ex-gratia assistance

₹30,000 2025 reference amount

For the widow or eldest orphan child following death in service.

A useful question to ask

“Has the unit already initiated this grant, and who will confirm its status?” Keep the answer and any reference number together in your file.

02 · REBUILDING INDEPENDENCE

NCs(E) widow rehabilitation

₹15,000 2025 reference amount

For widows of NCs(E) personnel who die in service.

A useful question to ask

“Which form and supporting records should I submit for this particular assistance?” Ask the office to identify anything still missing before you send the application.

03 · A FAMILY MILESTONE

Marriage assistance

₹25,000 2025 reference amount · confirm revisions

For one daughter of an in-service casualty’s widow; one son if there is no daughter.

A useful question to ask

“What rate and deadline apply to the date of this marriage?” Check this before relying on an older online article.

04 · MEDICAL BOARDING OUT

Medical assistance

₹20,000 2025 reference amount · confirm revisions

For the wife when medical boarding out is not attributable to service.

A useful question to ask

“Which medical-board finding and discharge documents are needed?” Present the actual records rather than relying on a brief description of the illness.

05 · A HOME FOR THE FAMILY

Dwelling-unit support

Check eligibility

Widows’ housing subsidy is routed through AFGIS.

A useful question to ask

“Does the proposed property qualify, and is approval needed before committing money?” Obtain the current written conditions before a purchase decision.

06 · CONTINUING EDUCATION

Educational scholarships

Scheme-specific awards

Support for children of deceased personnel is referenced through IAFBA.

A useful question to ask

“Which scheme covers this course and academic year?” Ask separately about fresh applications, renewal, marks requirements and other scholarships already received.

07 · HIGHER STUDIES

Late Smt Aruna Vinod Mehta Memorial Scholarship

Corpus-linked award

One-year postgraduate support for two daughters of in-service casualties; merit selection if oversubscribed.

A useful question to ask

“Is the current application notice available, and how are eligible candidates selected?” Keep the admission letter and academic record ready for the office to review.

08 · SKILLS FOR WORK

Arjan Singh Memorial Skill Development Scholarship

Up to ₹75,000 2025 reference ceiling

Widows’ AFFWA-approved training: IAFBA reimburses actual fees, capped at ₹75,000.

A useful question to ask

“Is this course approved before I enrol?” Clarify the reimbursement process and the documents to retain before paying the training provider.

Confidence grows through participation

Welfare also means belonging

At the January 2025 Bagdogra camp, 60 children took part in an AFFWA-supported programme of adventure and teamwork. Activities included climbing-related challenges, archery and other supervised outdoor experiences.

Such events show another side of family welfare: opportunities to learn, make friends and try something new. Ask your local welfare office about programmes suitable for your family.

Turn information into a practical next step

Prepare before you apply

  1. Confirm the scheme

Describe your circumstances to the local AFFWA or unit welfare office. Ask for the current policy, form, eligibility conditions and submission deadline.

  2. Build one clear file

Use the office’s document list. Check that names, dates and service particulars agree across the records, and retain copies of everything submitted.

  3. Keep a traceable record

Request an acknowledgement or reference number. Note the receiving office, date and follow-up contact so you can ask about progress accurately.

Your preparation checklist

Suggested preparation—not a substitute for the scheme’s official document list. Tick items as you organise them; ticks are not submitted or saved.

Keep sensitive documents in your application file. This information page does not collect them.

Before you take the next step

Common questions

Why do different websites show different amounts?

First compare the publication dates and scheme names. Ask AFFWA for the rate applicable to your circumstances and the relevant revision order. The figures on this page are explicitly identified as 2025 reference figures.

Can I submit a grant application on this page?

No. This is an independent information guide from Apna Legal Saathi. Use the application route confirmed by the responsible welfare organisation.

What if I do not have a required document?

Ask the receiving office which replacement or alternative evidence it will accept. Avoid guessing, and keep any written clarification with your application.

How should I follow up on an unanswered application?

Use a short written request containing the scheme name, submission date and acknowledgement number. Ask whether any document is pending and which office currently holds the application.
